I International Photography Contest “Faces and Places”

As you all know, during this year we have been participating in an eTwinning project called “So Far, So Near” with a partner school in Poland. One of the last activities we are doing is this International Photo contest. Here I bring you what two of my students have written about the contest for the eTwinning SNA in Madrid at their request of information. It is in Spanish, but if you have problems to understand you can use google to solve it.

“Durante todo el curso 2009-10 hemos estado trabajando con los alumnos de un centro polaco próximo a Varsovia en un proyecto eTwinning llamado “So Far, So Near”. Hemos hecho muchas actividades en el aula de Moodle que nuestros profesores crearon, y nos hemos divertido mucho.

Hace unos meses los profesores polacos, Mr. y  Mrs. Marcin y Elzbieta Grzyb, que tienen mucha experiencia en fotografía y en hacer concursos entre sus alumnos, convocaron uno para todos los alumnos de los dos centros, aunque no estuviesen participando en el proyecto. El concurso tenía como nombre “Faces and Places” y el objetivo era que, con nuestras fotos, mostrásemos a nuestros colegas del otro país cómo es nuestro entorno y las personas que nos rodean.

El plazo de presentación de trabajos terminaba el 21 de mayo, y a partir de esa fecha nuestros profesores elegirían los ganadores de entre todos los concursantes. Podíamos presentar un máximo de tres trabajos, y los podíamos subir al blog del aula virtual en Moodle o enviar a nuestros profesores por correo electrónico. Luego ellos los subieron a Picasa para que todos pudiésemos ver lo que los demás habían hecho.

Nosotros en Burlada hemos estado sacando fotos lo más originales que podíamos y que se nos ocurría. Para darle un empujón final a la actividad nuestro profesor, Javier Baile organizó, junto con la profesora de Sociales, una marcha en bicicleta a lo largo del Camino de Santiago. Acudimos todos provistos de cámaras de fotos y tuvimos la oportunidad de sacar muchas para el concurso.

Ha habido mucha competitividad y por ello todas las fotos finalistas eran muy buenas (chosen photos)  ya que todos nos hemos esforzado duramente por intentar mostrarles a nuestros socios lo que más nos gusta de nuestro entorno, y ellos también lo han hecho muy bien con las suyas.

Este concurso, además de para pasarlo bien, también nos ha servido para mejorar nuestro inglés porque cada foto tenía que ser acompañado de una ficha detallada en inglés con los datos técnicos de la misma y con un comentario que recogiese qué habíamos querido mostrar en ella.

Para finalizar la actividad hoy 11 de Junio  hemos tenido la entrega de premios en la que hemos recibido diplomas y diversos regalos que el Servicio eTwinning en España nos ha enviado.

En nombre de los ganadores y de todos los que hemos participado, creemos que ha merecido la pena y nos gustaría hacer más actividades como ésta en el futuro.

Ibaialde News 18 (June 2010)

We have just finished the making of our last Ibaialde News issue. The copy you can download here, or buy at the English department for just one euro, is the final result of long hours of work of a large number of students at the school, and many more in Poland. As usual we hope you like the articles we bring you here, they have been written to help you know us a little bit more. At first you may think they are just some simple productions of a bunch of teenagers, but besides that there is much more here.

While you read it you will realize how much they love Ibaialde and the people who make it. We also show you here some of the type of activities we do at the school. They try to learn with them, as they are all written in English, the language they study in class, but at the same time they enjoy what they do.

This magazine is much more than just studying and practicing the language, they use the language to do things, many of them similar to the ones they do in Spanish, but at the same time there are some they couldn’t do if they didn’t have this language like those they have been doing all the year with their colleagues in Poland thanks to the eTwinning project we are now finishing.

After two years without Ibaialde News all the staff are completely new in this type of activities, and that means they have had to learn quick, but they have always had the models left by former collaborators and the help of their teachers encouraging them to go ahead.

I also want to thank the Parents´ Association for their economic support to the making of this magazine.

Finally, to all those who have bought it because you thought that it was worth paying one euro for it, I hope you never regret it!

The Camino in Navarra (The Pilgrims’ Way)

Here I bring you some information about an activity we did three weeks ago. In our eTwinning project we were studying the traditons in our regions. Our partners in Poland had prepared a short, but nice presentation, about All Saints’ Day, and then we decided to let them know about our Pilgrims’ Way (Camino de Santiago).


First we studied in class the Camino de Santiago in Navarra, and that included watching a video some of our colleagues had made in the past of the first stage in Navarra, and then we had a short trip by bike.

First stage in the Camino: Roncesvalles-Zubiri

When we studied this topic we emphasized its important in the making of Navarra, especially in the medieval times. Many of our cities were born, or grew along the Camino for centuries.

Then, before getting on our bikes and starting cycling, we watched this video made by the Tourism Service in Navarra.  It’s quite short, but it gave us a general idea of the scenery places it gets through in our region.

Now it was the time to read something more. We studied in class these few pages I had prepared with the information you may obtain from Navarra’s Official Webpage.

Once we knew a little bit, Mertxe Sesma (Social Sciences teacher) and I invited the students to join us in the activity we had prepared for everybody in class. But first, if they wanted to come along, they should check how their bikes were because we were planning to ride along the last few kilometers before Pamplona.

Finally, after a week delay due to the bad weather, we did it.  If you want to have a good and detailed idea of what it was all about, you have three possibilities:

a) Go to Picasa and see the photos we took on that day,

b) Enjoy these 8  Presentations most of the students have made while learning how to work with PowerPoint/Impress.

c) Or just enjoy watching this simple video we have edited.

As you can see, after enjoying all the materials we produced, it was much more than a normal class. We had the chance to take some photos and practice some English with the pilgrims we met on the Camino that day, and also make our partners in Poland jelous  of what we had done, and hopefully we will have the opportunity to show them some time in the future when they visit us. So we can say… It was worth all our effort!

Ibaialde (FP)

Como cada año, los alumnos de 4º curso de Comunicación Audiovisual de la Universidad de Navarra han realizado algunos documentales dentro de las prácticas de la asignatura de Producción Televisiva. Me escribe un buen amigo, profesor en dicha Facultad, porque algunos de sus alumnos han grabado un reportaje (o documentalillo) de 5′ sobre Ibaialde y las enseñanzas de cocina. Pensaba que yo lo conocería, pero no era éste el caso. Como puede que os pase lo mismo, aquí tenéis el enlace al vídeo.  Desconozco quienes son sus autores, pero les felicito por el trabajo.

Ibaialde News 17 (Venancio’s retirement)

This time we offer you a very special, and dear, issue of our magazine.

Special and very dear because it is dedicated to Venancio on the occasion of his retirement. He has been many years with us and then many more teaching in other schools in Burlada and other places in Navarre. Once we knew about his plans we decided we wanted to do something, and after considering a long list of possibilities, we decided to make a special issue of Ibaialde News dedicated to him.  Then we made some changes from a normal magazine. As it was for Venancio, his family and his friends, we thought we should give everybody the chance to write in the language they preferred, and many have done it in Spanish. We have not translated them because that might change some of the affection and love shown in all the lines of the articles published here.

Dear Venancio, thanks and we will never forget all what you mean to us!
